AFC 69 “Rivera vs. Waalkes” Main Event Results and Recap
Alaska Fighting Championship takes place in Anchorage, Alaska at Sullivan Sports Arena. This was AFC 69 and it took place on March 9th, 2010. Good evening fans as I walked in to the parking lots of the George Sullivan Sports Arena in Anchorage, Alaska I see lines of cars a mile long. I saw a rush of people trying to get in to the arena and the crowd looks so fired up. When I got in to the arena I saw many MMA fight fans getting there popcorn, hot dogs and beverages. I went downstairs and met the promoter of the AFC Sarah Johnson. Now fans the AFC has been around six years and tonight was a title fight for the light heavyweight championship.
The current title holder was Jesus(the truth) Rivera who is 6 foot 4 and weighing in at 205 pounds he has held the belt an astonishing 2 years and tonight was a chance to either keep it or loose it. Now you have to understand that there are many hungry fighters out there looking for the belt including Stephen (incredible Hulk) Waalkes who is 6 foot 2 and weighing in at 204 pounds. As the ref called the fighters to the corners they both looked pumped and ready to rumble.
Round 1:
When the ref rang the bell for the fighters to start fighting Rivera and Waalkes both touched gloves out of respect for one another and the battle began. It started out with Rivera throwing a few hard blows to Waalkes who countered the blows with a hard take down and the two at that point in time came back up from the mats and Rivera took Waalkes to the fence where Rivera slammed Waalkes to the matt with a nice take down. Then Rivera was on top of Waalkes throwing a few nice blows to his face and one hard elbow. Then the clock was getting pretty close to the end of the round and Rivera kept the blows coming on until the bell rang meaning the round had ended.
Round 2:
When the second round started each fighter came out with a few nice blows and eventually Waalkes slammed Rivera to the matt and tried a rear naked choke hold but could not get it right so Rivera broke out of it. At this point in time both fighters were very exhausted. Waalkes gained control over Rivera and jumped on him and started throwing a few more punches. Eventually Waalkes went for another rear naked choke hold to have Rivera slip out a third time. At this point in time Rivera looked pretty good and gained body control over Waalkes to get on him and landed a few nice blows to Waalkes including another nice elbow to his face. The ref blew the whistle for the second round to be over and at this point in the fight both fighters look very winded and out of gas.
Round 3:
The fog horn blew for the third round and once again both fighters came out landing a few nice blows to one another and Rivera eventually brought down Waalkes to the matt trying once again with an elbow to the back of the head of Waalkes which was a 2 point violation. Then Rivera went for a rear naked choke hold but he could not get it right and eventually Waalkes broke out of it and the ref stood them both back up. At this point in time the ref warned Rivera about elbowing to the back of the head and the fight continued with each fighter throwing a few nice punches to one another. Rivera slammed Waalkes to the ground to take control and landed a few nice blows to the face of Waalkes when the fog horn blew to end the third round.
Round 4:
The forth round started out with both fighters very tired landing a few punches to one another until Rivera went for a take down and tried a rear naked choke hold on Waalkes but once again could not get it right. At this point in time I feel Waalkes really wanted to end the fight so he gained control over Rivera and went for a rear naked choke hold and planted it just right to end the fight. In the end the AFC had a new light heavyweight champion Stephen (incredible hulk) Waalkes. Congratulations to both fighters it was a spectacular fight.
