UFC 109 Serra vs. Trigg Preview
February 4, 2010 by Matt Coffman

Matt Serra vs. Frank Trigg
This battle at 170 should be a great fight at UFC 109 between two of the sports most seasoned veterans. Frank Trigg, in his last fight at UFC 103 suffered his 7th loss to Josh Koscheck. Trigg was out matched; Koscheck had a much faster stand-up and better wrestling and take down skills.
Serra, former UFC welterweight champ has suffered two loses in a row, Hughes and GSP. Serra has one of the best ground games in the welterweight division, but his striking is lack luster. Both fighters Trigg age 37 and Serra age 35 are aging a bit, but this should not take away from the fight by any means.
Whenever Serra is fighting, I generally have a hard time predicting the fight, point and case, Shonie Carter and the famous spinning back-fist. The fight will be in Serra’s advantage if he is able to take down Trigg. Serra should try to bring the fight to the ground by any means; if he does you might see an early first round submission.
Trigg should keep the fight standing at all cost. He has only submitted 3 opponents in his career, two by a forearm across the throat and one by rear naked choke. I don’t see Trigg submitting Serra with a forearm. Trigg has really only two plays in the fight, keep it standing or just grind the fight out on top and not move too much.
This fight has been built up by Trigg calling Serra an “angry midget”. Serra has not really responded and when he did replied “I’m not sure where he got the angry part from”. The trash talking is to be expected with two fighters on the verge of both moving out of the UFC. I think if Trigg loses the UFC will have a hard time putting him on another card. Serra has sputtered losing his last two fights but, was the UFC belt holder not that long ago.
Overall, this should be a decent fight to check out. It is not a super-fight, but still should be entertaining none the less. Serra, I believe has the advantage over Trigg because of his great ground game. Both fighters are nearing the end of there career’s. This could be the last time that you will ever see them fight in the UFC, not likely but I wouldn’t be shocked if Trigg or Serra announces that they are done after this fight.
