The Ultimate Fighter 10 Season Finale

December 7, 2009 by Matthew J. Swanson

The conclusion to Season 10 of the Ultimate Fighter, the “Ultimate Finale,” was an action packed night.  Here’s what happened in case you missed it:

First up, two former NFL players, Matt Mitrione and Marcus Jones squared off, with Matt chalking up an impressive win over the bigger and stronger Jones, keeping Marcus from getting him to the ground where Marcus has made mince meat out of opponents by overpowering them, whereas standing up, Marcus doesn’t quite have the chops yet.  He literally fell down like a big tree.  “Timber!”  However, both men have a future in the UFC if Marcus can step up his stand up and Matt can stop being a weirdo.  Just watch a couple episodes of him on the reality show and you’ll see what we mean.

Then, in the significantly smaller 155 pound division, Frankie Edgar and Matt Veach met up with Frankie setting up a successful choke-out with some impressive head shots.

Then Hulk Hogan was interviewed for no reason.

Then in the lightweight division, Mark Bocek climbed up for a piggyback ride on Joe Brammer, forcing Brammer to tap out.  One wonders why Brammer wouldn’t try to slam him to the ground to get that monkey off his back.

Then, backyard brawler Kimbo Slice won a decision in a very, very boring fight against a usually more aggressive Houston Alexander.  If we didn’t know any better, we’d say that Houston was paid off to go easy on the very marketable Kimbo, but you didn’t hear that from us.

Then, onto the light heavyweights, Matt Hammil was unsuccessful in fighting off Jon Jones with Jones’ ungodly 84 and a half-inch reach.  Not since Dhalism, with his stretchy arms, from the video game Street Fighter have we seen arms and legs quite like that.  Jones hits you with all kinds of constant shots of a wide variety, and they all hurt, which is what Hammil figured out the hard way.  However, the blow putting Matt away was an illegal twelve-to-six, straight-down elbow, which led to a loss by disqualification.  This was a major screw up by Jon because he had a full mount on the guy with no way of escape for Hammil.  What a horrible way to get your first loss: delivering a series of dirty elbows to a deaf guy.

Then Darill Schoonover, affectionately called “Titties” by opposing coach Rampage Jackson on the Ultimate Fighter reality show, got beat up badly by James McSweeney.

Then, the much more experienced and much fatter Roy Nelson beat Brendan Schaub with an impressive punch to the head of his opponent.  Brendan’s nickname is The Hybrid.  That could be the dumbest, least intimidating nickname in all of MMA; not nearly as cool as Roy’s nickname: big contry.  As Joe Rogan points out, Roy has surprisingly good cardio for a man with a hanging beer belly, which he rubbed for the crowd after jumping on the rail of the Octagon.  Roy showed people what he can do with that belly, leaning it into Brendan, which he often does, and make no mistake people, Roy Nelson is for real.  Don’t count out the fat man, and hey, this guy could be just as marketable as Kimbo: The fat everyman.  Brendan fought well, and he has a bright future too; he’s a hard puncher, a smart, disciplined fighter, and a great athlete.  With more experience for Brendan, this fight could have been an even better one.  Perhaps they will meet again.

Hope we meet again too!  Be sure to come back for more insights from our blogs and tons of other fun things to see on Fight Trader, and be sure to log in and leave us a comment below.
